I studied PR and Brand Communications at Durham College. Since graduating I've spent six years in social media, first at a marketing agency managing multiple brands at once, then in house building a brand's social presence from the ground up. This is a selection of that work.
I studied PR and Brand Communications at Durham College in Oshawa, Ontario. After graduating I went into a marketing agency, where I spent four years managing social media for several different client brands at the same time. Some of those brands had no social presence at all when I started working with them, so I built their platforms up from zero. Each one had its own tone, audience and visual style, so I got used to switching between them quickly.
After four years I wanted a new challenge, so I moved to work in house at a sustainable packaging company. It was my first time working in B2B. I took ownership of the full social media and brand communications function, built their presence across four platforms from scratch, launched a B2C product line with content for both an Amazon store and a WooCommerce website, and handled everything from video and graphics to SEO articles and PR support.
I spent four years at the agency managing social media for multiple client brands at the same time. The clients spanned several different industries, one was a supplement company where I helped build the brand's social presence from the ground up and prepared and managed their tradeshow appearances. Several came in with no social presence at all and I grew their platforms from zero. Each brand had its own tone, visual identity and audience, so the work involved switching between quite different ways of writing and designing. I worked across Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and more, and also supported PR activity, media outreach and internal communications for clients.
This was my first in house role and my first time working in B2B. The content before I arrived was functional but dry, very typical of a B2B company that hadn't really invested in social yet. I came in and rebuilt it. That meant setting up the strategy, creating visual templates, writing tone of voice guidelines, running the content calendar, producing graphics and video, writing SEO articles and handling PR. I also got involved in the launch of a B2C side of the business, creating all the content for an Amazon store and a WooCommerce website, and using Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest to drive traffic to both. One of the things I pushed hardest for was making the content more human. Even in B2B, the content that performs is always people focused. I got permission to film inside the facility, put real people on camera, and it made a real difference to engagement and to traffic to the store.
